Egg-Xactly: How Many Eggs Should You Eat Everyday?

Everyone knows that eating eggs is healthy. Dieticians and health experts laud the nutritional benefits of eggs. Yet a question lingers: just how many eggs should people eat everyday?

For over 50 years people had been led to believe that eating the yolk would increase their blood pressure levels and increase their risks for cardiovascular disease therefore the popularity of eggs has diminished, as people fear the yolk’s high cholesterol levels.

With over 50 years of cholesterol-feeding studies nutritionists now know this is not true. The fat content in an egg yolk, albeit in high levels, is of a good kind -- the kind that helps the body function. In fact, cholesterol is actually essential for hormone production. Without fat, the human body would not work correctly. Still, the thinking that eggs are bad in general has persisted; people have limited their egg consumption-- or at least of egg yolks.

The common recommendation is to have a maximum of two to six yolks per week, depending on a person’s body weight, type, and dietary needs. Nevertheless, these suggestions have not been scientifically validated.

Thankfully, there are other studies that should give consumers an idea on recommended daily intakes. These studies suggest that eating one to three whole eggs per day raises good cholesterol (HDL) levels, with bad cholesterol (LDL) levels remaining constant. Consuming three eggs a day also lowered blood triglycerides and raised blood levels of carotenoid antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin.

However, scientists caution that the response to whole egg consumption varies per individual but in general, eating at least one egg a day has many benefits. For around 70 percent of people, eating an egg a day did not affect total or LDL levels. The remaining 30 percent did see an increase, but only slightly. When paired with proper diet and exercise, these raised figures would not statistically increase risks for cardiovascular disease.

These studies suggest that up to three whole eggs per day are perfectly acceptable for healthy people.
